AdSense v. YPN: No Surprise Finding
Posted by Hendry Lee on 06/19/06 in Google AdSense, Yahoo Publisher Network
It has proven again and again, if you use YPN on your blog/ site, chances are your CTR is lower than when using AdSense. That was probably due to the variety of ad inventory available from Google. For about one and a half month a friend and I were able to test out YPN v. AdSense on a couple of sites.
Well, I guess there is not much news to write about. In fact, most of them align very closely with what other bloggers and web publishers have to say.
In a relatively smaller niche, YPN generated about 1/6 of the clickthrough compared to AdSense. The revenue from YPN is about 1/3 of Google AdSense. It is obvious that Yahoo! Publisher Network is indeed giving away more to their publishers, assuming that advertisers pay the same amount, of course.
In another niche, although Google AdSense ads yield twice more CTR than YPN, we have earned more from YPN than AdSense.
Cost-per-click may be higher in YPN, and is generally true for eCPM too. But in terms of relevance we found that AdSense is the winner, hence the clickthrough. We are using more or less the same ad format for both network.
Which do you choose, relevancy all over your site, including the ads or more revenue? The situation may change in the future though.
For now, I would recommend that you test both ad network, and probably others to see which satisfy your sites spefically and niche generally. Rotating between two networks is easy to do now. You never know until you test.
